About the History
18th century (townhouse facade); hotel opened 1898 · Grand 18th-century Parisian mansion (hôtel particulier) with Belle Époque interior
The Ritz Paris was founded on 1 June 1898 by Swiss hotelier César Ritz in collaboration with French chef Auguste Escoffier, constructed behind the façade of an 18th-century townhouse at 15 Place Vendôme. It was among the first hotels in Europe to provide an en suite bathroom, electricity, and a telephone for each room. The property's history traces back to 1705, and the hotel was built on the former Hôtel de Gramont. The hotel was renovated from 1980 to 1987 following purchase by Mohamed Al-Fayed, and again from 2012 to 2016, reopening in 2016. The term 'ritzy' entered the social vocabulary from this establishment.
