About the History

1928–1930 · Art Deco

Monument Historique (listed 2000); recognised as exceptional 20th century monument in 2011

Commissioned in 1928 and completed in 1930 by Édouard Mignot, founder of the Comptoirs Français and owner of Heidsieck Monopole champagne, the Château de Sept-Saulx is one of the rare French castles built in the Art Deco style. Architect Louis Süe, a Prix de Rome laureate, designed the building; Richard Desvallières crafted the ironwork; and landscape architect Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier — creator of the Bagatelle gardens — designed the French-style park. The estate passed through generations of the Mignot family. In 2000 the château and park were listed as historical monuments. In 2011 it was recognised as an exceptional 20th century monument, and Marie-Sybille de Villaines Mignot had the chapel (Oratoire) built. In 2021, Marie-Sybille Mignot, the granddaughter, opened the estate to public events.
