About the History
18th century · Italian Renaissance / Venetian folly with Florentine facade
The origins of the bastide date back to the 18th century. Originally a 'maison des champs' (country house) for holiday retreats, the estate later served as a wine-producing chateau, silkworm farm, and alcohol distillery. The surrounding vineyards were planted with the celebrated Saint Aramon grape variety, which made the fortune of local wine-estate owners. Some castellated their buildings, and Chateau Sainte Cecile was transformed into one of the most beautiful architectural follies of the Languedoc-Roussillon region. A magnificent Venetian folly, it became the property of several families, the most famous being the Saint-Exupery family.
