About the History

12th century · Eclectic (transformed in the second half of the 19th century), with 12th century turrets

The chateau's 12th century turrets bear witness to its medieval past. It was gifted by King Saint Louis to Thomas d'Aulnoy, known as 'de la Houssiere', in 1250. The surrounding moat dates to the 16th century, while the castle as it stands today is largely an 18th century vestige. The De Charnace family acquired it in 1809 and kept it for 200 years. Architect Louis-Jules Bouchot transformed it into a jewel of eclecticism in the second half of the 19th century. A full restoration was carried out by Jean-Marc Pitet from 2018 through 2021. Formerly known as Chateau de la Houssiere, it was renamed Chateau de Bonaventure in homage to Bonaventure Gautier de Charnace, first owner of this lineage. The illustrious Countess d'Aulnoy, who coined the term 'fairy tale', notably passed through its gates.
