About the History

Built in 1854 by one of France's most eminent families, La Rochefoucauld, Chateau Challain stands as an exceptional testament to Neo-Gothic romanticism. It was crafted by Madame Rochefoucauld after the tragic loss of her husband. The chateau's origins trace back to the medieval era, with the earliest recorded structure dating to 1050, built on the site of a 12th-century castle. Designed as a celestial observatory: four towers symbolise the seasons, twelve turrets mark the lunar months, twenty-six spiral staircases count the fortnights, fifty-two fireplaces represent the weeks, and three hundred and sixty-five windows mirror the days of the year. The architectural marvel spans an impressive 7,600 square metres.
