A Handmade Vintage Wedding in the Rhône-Alpes Countryside

Vivian and Michael’s wedding in the Rhône-Alpes region of France was a heartwarming fusion of cultures, craftsmanship, and charm. Set in a 13th-century wedding château in Isère, surrounded by lush countryside, the celebration reflected both French tradition and the couple’s unique story. Vivian, a Taiwanese American from San Francisco, and Michael, of Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and French descent, met while studying in Switzerland. Their shared love of history, antiques, and music inspired a vintage, music-themed garden party that was as personal as it was picturesque. With its hand-crafted details and heartfelt atmosphere, the day felt distinctly “très français” yet warmly international.

A “Très Français” Garden Celebration

The couple chose the Rhône-Alpes wedding château for its rustic charm and family connection - Michael was born in Allevard-les-Bains, and they wanted to marry in his home department. The ceremony, officiated by a close friend, was held in French, English, and Chinese, symbolising their union of cultures. Decor was entirely handmade, using sheet music from Michael’s music school, lace and burlap from the family attic, and antiques collected from French brocantes. The couple’s logo, a cat perched by a gramophone, playfully replaced the famous “His Master’s Voice” dog - a nod to their beloved Chartreux cats. Every element, from the birdcage veil to the herb-filled jars, told a story of creativity, family, and love.

A Celebration of Culture, Craft, and Connection

The reception blended French gastronomy with personal touches: guests enjoyed foie gras, local cheeses, macarons, a pièce montée, and plenty of Champagne and Chartreuse liqueur. A Portuguese folklore group, organised by Michael’s mother, performed during the apéro, honouring his heritage. With friends and family decorating together the night before, the day became a true community celebration. Vivian described the experience as “a beautiful reminder of how blessed we are to be surrounded by love.” Every detail, captured by a talented local photographer and styled by an international hair and makeup team, reflected the couple’s story - a wedding that was as heartfelt as it was handcrafted, perfectly blending vintage style with French soul.

Design and Details

A styled wedding decor detail shot taken outdoors at what appears to be a French countryside venue, with rolling fields and a stone wall visible in the background. The vignette features a vintage brass gramophone with an ornate engraved horn placed on a decorative wooden cabinet, styled alongside a stack of aged hardcover books, a glass bottle holding a single large white peony, and a small antique coffee or spice grinder to the right. The overall styling theme is vintage and rustic, with warm brass and dark wood tones forming the decor palette. The composition is a medium close-up shot capturing the full arrangement at slight eye level against the open landscape.
